Maria Scharwiess took her first piano and organ classes when she was 10 years old, and since she was 14 years, she has regularly played at hospital services. During her school years, she took additionally church music lessons, and then she played in a band full-time for ten years, approx. 8 of them in Norway.
In 1976 she returned to Berlin, where she began studying church music at the Spandau Kirchenmusikschule, and graduated in 1979. Since September 1979, she has been employed by the Evangelical Nathanael church, and in the period 1999-2007 she was a main organist in Schöneberg.
For more than 20 years, she has played weekly organ music, mostly improvisations, but also jazz, rock music, pop, gospel and international folk tunes.
