The organ safari is the church festival’s annual round trip by bus to some of Tromsø’s organs and organists. In the bus we are guided about organs and music. It is a wonderful way to start to the weekend! This year the trip goes to four beautiful churches with some of Tromsø’s talented organistswho play six very different organs.
We start in Tromsø Cathedral, where Erlend Karlsen plays. In Grønnåsen Annimari Pelli is expected to play, in Kroken Stamen Stantchev. The safari ends at Linde Mothes in Tromsdalen, before head back to Tromsø Cathedral.
The main composers this year are the French Camille Saint-Säens (1835-1921) and Marcel Duprè (1886-1971).
Saint-Säens is best known for his third symphony called “The Organ Symphony” from 1886. He also wrote six preludes and fugues for organ, of which the most performed is prelude and fugue op.99, no. 3.
The main emphasis of Duprè’s compositional work is devoted to organ, some of them have a degree of difficulty that makes them almost impossible to play due to extremely fast tempo, fast figures and demanding pedal use.
